Life in 3/4 Time

Deserted Streets, Empty Spaces 4/4 Time Key of A Major or G Major

Deserted streets, and empty spaces, (A-C#m) (G-Bm)

Where’s everyone gone today? (D-A) (C-G)

I miss them familiar faces, (A-C#m) (G-Bm)

Why was it they had to go away? (D-A E7 to A ) (C-G-D7-G)

Roads go quiet every afternoon. (A-D) (G-C)

Grandkids shelter behind closed doors. (E7-A) (D7-G)

They won’t visit till the next blue moon. (A-D) (G-C)

When leaves have fallen to the forest floor. (E7-A) (D7-G)

Kids are like trees, they spread branches,

Their hearts want to wander and roam.

But no one is outside, takin chances,

And you can’t go very far from home.

Deserted streets, and empty spaces,

Where’s everyone gone today?

I miss them familiar faces,

Why was it they had to go away? (E7 to A) (D7-G)

Friends who sing country stopped comin round,

You can’t hear live music played no where.

There’s no browsin bookstores in the downtown,

Grocery shelves, well, they’re kinda bare.

What did you do in the great pandemic?

Did you wash your soul till it was raw?

Was it a joke, or a gimmick?

Did it help your heart begin to thaw?

Deserted streets, and empty spaces,

Where’s everyone gone today?

I miss them familiar faces,

Why was it they had to go away?

Who Made The World-Key of D Major

For Mary Oliver (1935-2019)

Don’t exactly know what a prayer is. (D-G-G5)

Who made the world? Who made the swan, (D-Gmaj7)

And the little black bear? (D)

I can see the sky, the clouds and the stars. (D-G-G5)

I can hike the hills, stroll through the fields. (D-Gmaj7)

And be alone. (G-D)

I know how to lie down, hide in the grass.

I can be alert, simple and blessed,

Like a little striped frog.

I can hear the wind, high in the trees.

And the singing bird, who shares his song.

Then flies away.

Instrumental Break

Don’t exactly know what a prayer is.

Who made the world? Who made the swan,

And the little black bear?

I know there’s only so many mornings.

Doesn’t everything die at last,

And too soon?

Tell me, friend, what are you gonna do? (D-G)

With your one, wild, precious life? (D-Gmaj7-G-D)

What’cha gonna do? What’cha gonna do? (Gmaj7-D)

Out with E7-G-D

The Winter Of Life-Key of G Major 4/4 Time

I keep seeing people, never seen before. (G-C)

Lost me some friends won’t be around no more. (D7-C-G)

Feel lonely outside when I walk around,

Seems I’m a stranger in my own home town.

Homeless man on the street, begs for food,

Accepts handouts with gratitude.

East wind’s blowing, (uh-huh) he’s nowhere to go.

Downtown the folks always tell him no.

It’s the winter of life, he can’t pay

Still he tries to get by everyday.

The winter of life, might not be here long, (Em-C-Am)

Lost and alone in my country song. (D7-C-G)

I keep seeing people, never seen before.

At night they come knocking on my door.

I leave it wide open, they walk right in.

And wonder about what might have been.

On the river, an old man fishes alone.

Wife moved on awhile ago, kids don’t phone.

Gotta little brown dog, keeps him company.

They watch the water flow out to sea.

It’s the winter of life, he don’t wonder why.

Throws a line in the river, time goes by.

The winter of life, might not be here long,

Fishing with dogs in my country song.

I keep seeing people, never seen before.

Wearing clothes I left at a Goodwill store.

They look a lot like me, like I used to be,

Now I’m a man they hardly see.

I wonder sometimes, am I in the way,

And does it matter if I go or stay.

That’s the way it is, I don’t count the years,

Or waste my days on fears and tears.

The winter of life, seen a lot on the way.

Gonna get where I’m goin day by day.

The winter of life, might not be here long,

Leaving behind my old clothes and a country song.

I Recall You When I Sing

For Phil and Little John

East of the border town of Lee Vining,   D-G

A few years after the Vietnam War      A7-D

A wild wind tumbled out of the desert,

Drowned Little John Gable and Phil Dufour.

At night coyotes cry out their love songs,

Riddled with the passion of their heat.

They prowl that lonely Mono Lake basin,

Looking for a little something to eat.

Chorus

When the snow is gone from Mt. Defiance,        G-Bm

And the rivers race high in the spring,                A7-D

We once shared the glory of our triumphs.

I’m alive and recall you when I sing.

Instrumental

I been meanin’ to try and get by with less.

And stayin’ busy might just see me through.

It’s better than doing nothing, I guess,

When everyday it seems there’s somethin’ new.

Maybe I’ll teach me how to meditate.

Be mindful in a way the holy can do.

It’s all a gift and on loan while we wait,

Lucky to see them stars are me and you.

Chorus

And repeat its last line

Today Will Not Be Here Tomorrow-3/4 Time Key of D Major

Breezes scatter the fallen leaves. (D-G) (D-C)

Autumn dissolves in a fading sun. (A-D) (G-D)

Birds alight on the naked trees,

Wanting shelter where there’s none.

Clouds roll across the mountain range.

Soaking the hills with winter rain.

Moons come and go, it doesn’t change.

We all share the trouble and pain.

Don’t you worry about what’s lost,

Promises are only to borrow.

It’s all free, there’s isn’t a cost.

Today will not be here tomorrow.

Instrumental Break

Rivers rise with the rain in spring.

West winds tumble across the sea.

Birds return and begin to sing,

Summer’s coming, let it be.”

That’s how it is, always the same.

We wish for that we cannot hold.

We all go back from where we came.

It’s an endless tale we are told.

Don’t you worry about what is gone.

Promises are only to borrow.

It’s all new with every dawn.

Today will not be here tomorrow.

In the Oregon Hills G Major

For Marilyn

Instrumental (G-D7-B7-Em-C….G-D7-G)

Where the Hood River flows in the Oregon hills, (G-C).

Red Tail Hawks soar above the trees. (G-D)

Steelhead and coho swim past lumber mills, (Em-C)

And Blue Heron fly gracefully. (G-D-G)

Looking back, time disappears in a blur,

Memories of what’s past and far away.

That river winds through woods of Douglas Fir,

And pastures where cattle graze all day.

Its ice cold water once washed our feet.

Crawdads scurried along in the stream.

Glacial melt it tasted oh so sweet.

Those summer days I recall in a dream.

Instrumental Break

We hiked paths to ends we didn’t see.

Up and down hills together we’d climb.

Coyotes and their pups ran wild and free,

In valleys carved by the river and time.

Thimble berries bitter sweet on our tongue.

Orchards drenched with July’s cherry rains.

The hush of mountain life, when we were young,

Broke with the sound of your labor pains.

Red Tail Hawks soared above them trees

Steelhead and coho swam past them mills

And the Great Blue Heron flew gracefully,

Where the Hood River flows in the Oregon hills.

Instrumental and out

When I Grow Up

For Savs

My eyes get moist, they start blinking. G-C

Sometimes my brain needs a little breather. G-D

Can’t always recall what I been thinking, G-C

Must be I got me some kind of fever. (that Grandpa) G-D-G

My fingernails are the color of rainbows.

It’s not the nineteen covid or a flu.

You can see signs in our knees and toes.

There’s something in me and it’s in you too.

Maybe I’ve got what I been missing.

Maybe there’s some things I’ll have to disrupt.

Maybe I’ll stop wasting time reminiscing,

Maybe learn what to be when I grow up.

Instrumental Break

Someday there’s gonna be a great big fire,

The smoke of me will float out to the planets.

Save them ashes after I expire,

Use em to grow ya some pomegranates.

You will be flying a bright pink spaceship.

You’ll cruise by me drifting among the stars.

Your copilot will be munching a corn chip, (Sam)

As you speed along on your way to Mars.

Maybe I’ve got what I was missing.

Maybe there’s some things I’ll have to disrupt.

Maybe I’ll stop wasting time reminiscing,

Maybe learn what to be when I grow up.
